Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills, also known as Nandidurg or Nandi Betta, is a picturesque hill fortress in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka, India. It is a popular tourist destination and a favorite among nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and history buffs.


Nandi Hills has a rich historical and mythological significance. It is believed to have been the summer retreat of Tipu Sultan, a prominent ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. The hills also have connections to various ancient dynasties, including the Cholas and the Pallavas. The name “Nandi Hills” is derived from the ancient Nandi temple situated at the top, dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva.

  2. Tippu’s Drop: This cliff is believed to be the spot where Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, used to execute prisoners by pushing them off the cliff.
  3. Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace: The remains of Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace, often referred to as Tipu’s Residence, can be explored at the base of the hills.
  4. Amrita Sarovar: It’s a beautiful lake located on the hill, surrounded by lush greenery. The serene ambiance and the picturesque views make it a perfect spot for relaxation.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore, approximately 65 kilometers away from Nandi Hills. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use other modes of transport to reach the hills.
  • By Rail: The nearest railway station is Chikkaballapur Railway Station, about 9 kilometers from Nandi Hills. From the station, you can hire a taxi or use local transportation to reach the hills.

Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit Nandi Hills is during the months of October to June. The weather during these months is pleasant, and the views from the hilltop are breathtaking. Avoid visiting during the monsoon season (July to September) as the roads can be slippery and visibility may be reduced due to fog and rain.
